To say 'Thor: Ragnarok (2017) is best of the three solo 'Thor' films, which it almost certainly is despite its tonal differences, may be faint praise. This generally entertaining, if somewhat messy piece, gets better once its plot is properly underway, which sadly takes around half of its runtime. At this point, the new comedic approach meshes with the pseudo sci-fi aesthetics to create a truly distinct entry in the 'MCU. Though this unique approach isn't entirely successfully and feels a little at odds with the core characters, it ultimately makes piece a lot more fun than it likely otherwise would have been. It doesn't quite manage to hit all of its emotional beats, but it does manage to keep you entertained (again, much more in its second half) and is actually a lot more plot focused than you may expect. It typically does a good job with its characters, although the villainess a little weak, and is often genuinely enjoyable on a surface level. It's funny at times, too. The first half is a bit of a slog, though, and the end result isn't as compelling or affecting as you'd hope. Still, it will probably satisfy disillusioned Thor fans if they don't mind changing his DNA a little. It's certainly better than either of his previous two outings. 6/10.
I have now seen this 5 times and it still makes me laugh - the first genuinely funny Marvel film that doesn't take itself seriously and sets out from the start to entertain. It never flags for a second - steamrollering through one episode to the next without allowing the audience to catch its breath. Everyone over-acts like it's a competition and the effect is an epic and inevitable cult classic. Nuff said.
